From the Tyrrhenian Coast: take the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway and follow the indications for Potenza. Then take the SS407 “Basentana” towards Metaponto and, following the signs, turn right for Matera just after Ferrnadina Scalo.
From the Adriatic Coast: join the Bologna-Taranto motorway and take the cut-off for Bari Nord. Pass through the industrial estatae and follow the indications for Altamura-Matera (SS96 and then SS99).
From Calabria and Sicily: once on the Reggio Calabria-Salerno motorway, take the cut-off for Sibari and keep on the SS106 Jonica (direction Taranto). In the vicinity of Metaponto, take the slip road for Matera
From Salento: on reaching Taranto, take the SS106 Jonica until the exit for Matera which can be found in the vicinity of Metaponto
The nearest airport is Bari, which is about 50km from Matera, and is well connected with other major Italian airports (Milan, Rome, Verona, Torino, Venezia, Bergamo and Bologna. International flights also arrive from London (Gatwick and Stansted), Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, Cologne, Bucharest, Tirana, Stuttgart, Munich and Timisoara. Not being part of the National train network, there are various solutions to get to Matera by bus. The bus company Marino connects Matera to Milan, Ancona, Bologna, Chianciano, Fiuggi, Naples, Novara, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Sassuolo and Urbino, as well as to many international cities.
